ABUS 390 Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, we want our students to:

Differentiate between data, information, and the knowledge base
Explain the interconnection between information systems, reengineering, and continuous improvement
Identify the hardware and software components of a computer based information system
Explain how data resources are managed in a computer based information system
Clarify the relationship between communications concepts and telecommunications media, devices, and carriers
List the various types of networks that link computers and integrate information systems resources
Explain the relationships between organizational structure, management level, problem solving activities, and types of information systems used
Explain the functional organization of management information systems and function specific subsystems
List the characteristics and components of decision support systems
Identify the areas in which artificial intelligence and expert systems exhibit characteristics usually associated with human intelligence
Conceptualize systems development as the activity of creating new or modifying existing business systems
Identify the links between systems investigation, analysis, and design
Identify the links between systems implementation, maintenance, and review
Clarify the social and ethical issues surrounding information systems
Explain how information resource management is a concept encompassing the management and control of all aspects of information systems
