1996 Beach Sweep

The SEA Club's first event was a beach clean up of Hunting Island by kayak. Eighteen students braved the rainy weather to pick up trash as they kayaked into the Hunting Island lagoon on September 21, 1996. Jea Chapman donated her time and the use of her kayaks from the Kayak Farm so students could get a real workout while they picked up everything from telephone wire to tires. Click here for photos.

Marine Science Symposium

The first Marine Science Symposium was held at the USCB campus. Students from the Marine Science Undergraduate Society, USC Columbia, presented their findings from summer research conducted on Pritchards Island. SEA Club members Allen Crosby, Jennifer Dunn, and Vera Basilone gave a presentation on the effects of added nutrients on a developing marsh overwash area. The presentations were open to students, faculty, and the public.
